Pushing Boundaries
Relationship Development
Relationships exist throughout the entire lifecycle of the project. Communities. Individuals. Governments. Non-human entities. Positive interactions begins with understanding all of those players involved, with a particular emphasis on knowing that Indigenous Peoples are not mere stakeholders in the process.
Intersectionality & GBA+
Biologists are required to study wildlife. Engineers are required for design. Social scientists are required to understand socioeconomic impacts, particularly to understand those impacts on vulnerable and marginalized populations.
Practical Policy & Applied Research
It can be hard to put theoretical or conceptual knowledge of socioeconomic impacts into practice. Often, researchers don’t actually speak with, or visit, the sites of projects. We end up with recommendations, policies, or programs that are out of touch for the on-the-ground realities.

Social Licence to Operate
Trust is the building block of the social licence and revolves around freely given consent. For resource projects, trust means the willingness to be vulnerable to a project proponent’s proposed activities.
Integrate
Resource impacts don’t ‘stop’ at the project site. Integrated and holistic analysis allows us to better understand how effects play out in different spaces. It’s about extending beyond the check-box or the strict departmental jurisdiction. We need to be incorporating other departments, ministries, and disciplines to create a fulsome understanding of impacts and effects.
